Based on PDB code 1KX5, this is the structure of the nucleosome core particle. Nucleosomes are the basic unit of chromatin and contain DNA wrapped twice around a core of eight histone proteins (two each of H2A, H2B, H3 and H4). The histone octamer forms a positively charged 3D surface and this attracts, bends and holds the negatively-charged DNA into place.
Our model shows the encircling DNA in grey and white, with the two H2A’s in pink, two H2B’s in blue, two H3’s in green and two H4’s in yellow. The model shows clearly how the DNA wraps around the outside of the histone core and has two magnetic halves that join together with each half showing an H2A, H2B, H3 and H4.
Three sizes of the model are available: 9cm, 12cm & 15cm.
In relation to the 11 nm diameter of the nucleosome, 9cm model is 8 million times larger, the 12cm model is 11 million times larger and the 15cm model is 14 million times larger.
Each model comes with a removable display stand.
