Based on PDB code 1BNA, this is an idealised structure of a DNA plasmid. Plasmids are naturally-occurring circular DNA molecules from bacteria. They are widely used for gene cloning and gene expression in molecular biology. In gene cloning, restriction enzymes are used to cut out a fragment of plasmid. A gene to be studied is then ligated into the plasmid vector.
Our hands-on model can be used to demonstrate how gene cloning works: a segment of the plasmid can be removed (to show restriction enzyme cutting) and a different coloured segment can then be clicked in (to show ligation of a gene). This 17.5 cm model is 17.5 million times larger than the 10 nm diameter of the plasmid and comes with a removable display stand.
